Power up for a Fun Filled Day Trip to Whidbey Island

Famous for its exquisite charm, character, great hospitality and adventure, Whidbey Island is the largest island in Washington. The best part about a Whidbey Island day trip is that you can see and experience the entire island in less than 24 hours.

Last spring, my whole group of friends planned a day trip to Whidbey Island. The first thing we did was to book a private yacht rental in Seattle. Graced with the mild climate, the Cascade mountains and the turquoise blue waters everywhere in the surroundings, we set sail to awaken our lost spirit. Our day was packed to the brim with one adventure after another.

Whidbey Island is a great place to wander, to drive around and stop at whichever place tempts you. While at Whidbey Island, we learned about the glorious past, sampled the delicious cuisines, explored unique shops and galleries, took a leisurely stroll through the picturesque gardens and farms, cruised along the water around the island. The mesmerizing view of the mountains in all directions was breath taking. We also enjoyed a full range of outdoor recreation, including hiking, kayaking, and boating.

DECEPTION PASS STATE PARK – Stunning views, great hiking, miles of shoreline, and extensive camping facilities make Deception Pass State Park one of the most popular state parks in Washington. The historic Deception Pass Bridge connects Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands. While here, make sure to take the stop at the viewpoint and walk onto the bridge to take in the eye captivating views of the water and forest scenery. Likewise the bridge connects the Deception Pass State Park which spreads over the two islands.

HIKING ON WHIDBEY ISLAND – Regardless you like a vigorous hike or a scenic stroll, Whidbey island provides countless opportunities to walk and wander for all. A few hiking options include:

  • Deception Pass State Park – With over 4,000 acres of hilly terrain, this gem of the Washington State Parks system has miles of trails. Be sure to walk across and under the bridge.
  • Fort Casey State Park – The hiking trails here pass through the park, along the beach, by the Admiralty Head Lighthouse and around the old gun batteries.

WATER RECREATION ON WHIDBEY ISLAND – Whidbey Island has a very twisty shoreline, thus resulting in being home to interesting coves and harbors. Furthermore, Whidbey Island is home to several freshwater lakes.

  • Kayaking – The credit for the same goes to several bays, lakes, and archipelagos. Seattleites have access to some pretty incredible kayaking conditions. If you don't have a paddle to call your own, Seattle Yacht Charters will lend you the kayaks and or paddleboards. You can also enjoy whale watching while kayaking.
  • Diving – Dive sites in the Pacific Northwest offer something for everyone whatever their skill level or experience. Keystone Jetty is the perfect place in Whidbey to go diving!! Carpets of Plumose and other invertebrates cover the rocks which are teaming with Rockfish and Lingcod. This site is absolutely beautiful.

GO FISHING, CRABBING AND SHELLFISHING – If you like fishing, then you're in luck!! At Whidbey Island, you can have an amazing saltwater and freshwater fishing experience year round. Salmon, Steelhead, Cod, Flatfish, and Perch are some of the more popular saltwater species while freshwater game includes trout and bass. If fishing is not your thing, try crabbing. Throw the pot in, burn some time enjoying the view off the pier or the yacht rental in Seattle, and when it feels right, pull up a pot full of Dungeness and red rock crab. If you think harvesting shellfish sounds interesting, you can always dig for clams. However, you need a state fishing license, a shovel and bucket.

DO NOT MISS WINE TASTING – Small wineries and a craft distillery, located in the spectacular rural countryside offers many acclaimed wines, award winning liqueurs, craft beers and unpretentious hospitality. The wines of the island represent the full range of the Washington varieties and regions including the exquisite and rare estate wines of Puget Sound. The cool clean air and fresh spring water coupled with the finest ingredients comes out with these world-class spirits. For all that Whidbey Island has to offer – a good drink makes it that much better for recreational possibilities.

One of the things you would like the most from your trip is how friendly everyone is on Whidbey Island. The residents are extremely welcoming, and it will really adds to the experience. Plan your visit with friends and family to Whidbey Island while in Seattle. Book one of the most luxurious yacht rentals in Seattle well in advance to explore this beautiful island that you can cherish for a lifetime.
